We arrived at Bangkok past 11:00 pm on Aug 6th.
We were greeted by our tour guide; Jonki. Jonki had prepared a U of A welcome
sign, which we all appreciated. Friday Aug 7th marked our first day
in one of the most wonderful cities in SE Asia; Bangkok.
We visited Mahidol pharmacy school. We were introduced to
the basic pharmacy curriculum and practice in Thailand. While there are a lot
of differences between the U.S. and Thai pharmacy, there still exist some
similarities in the practice. For example, Thai students need to decide on the
profession they want to pursue after they graduate high school and pharmacy
school is a 6 year-pharmD program, including pre-pharm courses. Other
differences include the track system in which students get intensive training
in one of the two main specialties; patient care or industry. The health
coverage system is very different in Thailand. Most of the population have a
national coverage in which patients’ medical expenses is paid by the government
with some exceptions in terms of the type of care and medications.
Places that we visited on Friday included Wat Pho and Wat
Arun. Wat means Temple in Thai. We learned about Buddhism and its role in the
Thai society and culture. We then took the boat to go to one of the local
restaurants or “street food”. We had pad Thai and coconut water. It was
amazing!
